Japan Day 13 - A Little Bit Country (Cherry Blossoms Are Everywhere)

When the hotel manager handed us the card keys for our room last night, he handed us two extras. Strange. What are they for? One is blue and one is pink. Secret rooms? Roof top bar? Better. The cards are entrance keys to the hotel's accompanying bath house on the top floor. Really? Awesome. Personally, nothing hits my reset button like switching back and forth between a good hot sauna and a dip in the running cold water bath. Top it off with a vending machine bought beer, and your edging perfection.

Back on the bikes in the morning, today we saw a lot of country and hence a lot of cherry blossoms. The most open country I suppose we will see for the next few days once the Hiroshima metropolis hits us.

There was no time to dilly dally this morning - especial after we recieved a room call from the front desk. They kindly reminded us that we had overstayed, and that check out was one hour earlier than we had properly assumed. Oops! No hard feelings.

Yesterday amounted to more climbing than I realized. Only today do we see the fruits of our labor, a sweet decline, following this calming river all the way down to Hiroshima Bay.

A bit stressful, seeing as how the highway we took is tight with narrow shoulders. Fortunate in our travels, just when descending inches alongside speeding 18-wheeled cargo trucks became a bit too dangerous, a village appeared just over the river. Their street, pictured here, is much more relaxing. And so we followed these parallel streets all the way down.

After the mountains, we came to a very nice and flat road that runs through town.

The river path is lined with Sakuras, what else?

Didn't even notice this little girl until I edited my photos, she must have moved fast!

The Thais say bad luck comes in threes. Up until this point, big sis has broken two of her rear spokes. Luckily I brought spares. Even more lucky, they fit her wheel. Now, you might have guessed, today she broke her third.

I decided to scout ahead as sis fixed her wheel. We were betting on a campsite off google maps. However, with no reviews and nothing more than the inverted V symbol (indicating camp sights) we wanted to at least check it out. Well, I went to check it out.

Let's say sister was lucky to have her rear spoke broken. It was a nasty climb up to the top where we thought camp sights would be. Turned out to be a complete bust. No camping anywhere. Yet, I snapped some cool pics of this found nature trail.

Too bad. We might have been able to camp here. Anyways, I hurried back down hill to my sis who was just wrapping things up with her bike. The climbing had brought on an appetite in my already rumbling belly. Time to eat.

Ask and you shall receive. Here I am starting off with a salad because it's been a long time.

This is pizza, macaroni and spinach and cheese, steamed vegetables alongside a generous helping of chiken and potatoes.

Then a hamburger.

Then five more slices of pizza because I'm me.

Never forget dessert. Blueberry sauced soft serve ice creame with cereal and sprinkles.

Pineapple, lemon, orange custard cake, berry custard cake, flan type something, and a fresh waffle topped off with chocolate and whip creme.

Oh, and a strawberry sauced soft serve ice cream with cereal and sprinkles too. Toward the end if the buffet, we tried to sneak in some sushi but the cook just wasn't ready yet and we couldn't wait. We still have no place to sleep.

Another sweet colored manhole cover.

The Sun sets to West in Hiroshima, just like everywhere else.

We hit up the first hotel my sister recommends. So far along this trip, it's the cheapest, in the middle of town, and sports an amazing view. Tripple jackpot.

Full but not tired, we walked around the night life Hiroshima offers. Of course we stepped into a used bookstore to browse and gander.

"This is the nicest used anything store I've been in."

Gabs even found a used Famicom! (That's SNES to Americans; circa early 90's). She wants one for her birthday, I might just have to oblige her.

Many rivers end in Hiroshima Bay. As we cross them at night by foot, the still waters reflect the night lights perfectly.

Tomorrow looks like much sightseeing and fun things to do, you'll have to check back then. We will also face a very tough decision: to go north or to go south - because we are sure as hell arnt going back home exactly the same way we came in!

Love,
-A
